Scanning Electron Microscopy and clay geomaterials: From sample preparation to fabric orientation quantification

چکیده
Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) has been widely used to investigate the microstructure of clays, and several studies have examined influence particles orientation on mechanical behaviour soil. However, as effect sample preparation that precedes imaging soil not systematically studied yet, extent which clay is disrupted quantified. This work investigated samples having different mineralogy, stiffness, aggregation, stress history them at magnifications in their Freeze, Oven Air dried state using SEM, wet Environmental SEM (ESEM) CryoSEM. The imaged micrographs was quantified with MiCA (Microstructural Clay Analyser), a Computer Vision based tool. results shows greatest for dispersed soft samples, where detected order increases decreasing drying speed, regardless mineralogy. this seems affect degree when CryoSEM technique employed. Moreover, flocculated generated acidic sedimentation environment overall experience lower reorientation. Finally, fabric stiff undisturbed significantly influenced by applied method.

Sample Preparation for Scanning Electron Microscopy: The Surprising Case of Freeze Drying from Tertiary Butanol
Introduction For scanning electron microscopy, our ability to examine wet specimens continually improves thanks to advances in instrumentation; nevertheless, drying wet samples remains indispensable, particularly for high resolution or for a sample that needs to be imaged repeatedly. In many laboratories, the standard method for drying is critical-point drying. In this method, samples are dehyd...

Size, shape, volume fraction and distribution of embedded g/ phase in g phase has direct effect on strength of INCONEL alloy. Microstructure parameters of INCONEL phases are quantified from microstructure images using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Different TEM sample preparation techniques were used to study INCONEL 738 alloy microstructure for transmission electron micros...

A metal -i mpregnation technique (tannin-ferrocyanide-osmium tetroxide) and thin metal coating imparted excellent preservation , and electric and thermal properties to milk products for scanning electron microscopy, resulting in highresolution images. Three nanometer resolution was obtained, with minimal edge effects, charging , thermal dri ft, and decoration. Samples were fixed in 2% glu ta ra...
متن کاملApplication of Scanning Electron and Atomic Force Mode Microscopy on inscription from Proto-Elamite period in Tappeh Sofalin
The study of cultural heritage artifacts and the research of a protection and restoration intervention create with - and are often limited to - a complete characterization of their surface. This is not only factual for museum objects, but also for archaeological artifacts, because the object as it was discovered may contain precious unknown information that could be lost by too much aggressive ...
متن کاملQuantitating morphological changes in biological samples during scanning electron microscopy sample preparation with correlative super-resolution microscopy
Sample preparation is critical to biological electron microscopy (EM), and there have been continuous efforts on optimizing the procedures to best preserve structures of interest in the sample. However, a quantitative characterization of the morphological changes associated with each step in EM sample preparation is currently lacking. Using correlative EM and superresolution microscopy (SRM), w...
